What Tree Spraying Actually Does
Tree spraying kills or controls pests and fungal diseases. Aphids, spider mites, scale insects, powdery mildew, apple scab – these are things that spray can address.
But here’s the thing: not all tree problems respond to spraying. Some require injections. Some require pruning infected branches. Some require a combination. We figure out which one before we recommend anything.
Why Timing Matters
A lot of people think you can spray whenever and it’ll work. That’s not how it works.
Aphids have a vulnerable period in spring when nymphs are emerging. Powdery mildew responds better to early-season treatment. Japanese beetles are vulnerable in June, not August. Bagworms need to be hit at the right stage of their development cycle.
We know these windows. We spray when it’ll actually matter.
The Case for Organic
Most commercial sprays work. Many are also toxic to non-target insects and persistent in the soil.
Organic sprays work differently. They’re often faster-acting but they don’t linger. They don’t accumulate in your soil. They won’t hurt the beneficial insects that eat the bad ones.
Will they work if you’re getting hammered by an infestation? Yes. Will they work if you’re treating a mild problem? Absolutely. Will they work if you spray in November when the insects are dormant? No. That’s why timing is everything.
Our Process
Diagnosis
We look at your tree. We check the leaves, branches, and trunk. We ask what you've noticed and when. We might even take a sample to confirm what we're looking at.
Treatment Plan
Once we know what's attacking your tree, we recommend the spray (or combination of treatments) that'll address it. We explain when we'll spray and why.
Application
We spray at the optimal time. Most treatments require a follow-up spray 10-14 days later. We schedule that upfront so you know what to expect.
Monitoring
We check back in to see how your tree is responding. If we're not seeing the improvement we expected, we adjust.
When You Might Need More Than Spraying
Sometimes spraying alone isn’t enough. If the infestation is severe or the disease is advanced, we might recommend:
Systemic injections
- Better for large, mature trees. The treatment goes directly into the tree's vascular system.
Pruning
- If branches are heavily infected, removing them might be more effective than spraying. You stop the disease from spreading to healthy wood.
Tree fertilization
- A stressed tree is more vulnerable to pests and disease. Making sure it has the nutrients it needs helps it recover faster after treatment.
