Common Tree & Shrub Pests We Handle
- Aphids Small, soft-bodied insects that cluster on new growth. They suck plant juice, weaken shoots, and leave sticky residue on everything below. Early-season treatment during nymph emergence is most effective.
- Spider mites Tiny arachnids that create stippled, yellowing leaves. They're worse in hot, dry conditions. Fine webbing is visible if you look closely. Can kill foliage quickly if left untreated.
- Scale insects Hard-shelled or soft-bodied insects that feed by piercing bark and branches. They're sometimes hard to spot until you notice the damage—yellowing, branch dieback, sooty mold. Different species require different treatment timing.
- Bark beetles Tunnel under the bark, creating problems that eventually kill branches or the whole tree. By the time you notice damage, the insects are deep in the wood. Prevention with systemic treatment or immediate removal of affected branches is key.
- Japanese beetles Voracious feeders that skeletonize leaves. They're worst in June and July. A single treatment during peak activity can eliminate a major infestation.
- Hemlock woolly adelgid Covers hemlock branches with white woolly masses. Kills hemlock foliage and eventually the tree if not treated. Requires aggressive treatment and persistence.
- Bagworms Create little silk bags on branches. They're the larval stage of moths. Treating at the right life stage makes treatment much more effective.
Why Timing Is Everything
Most insects go through life cycles. Eggs. Nymphs. Adults. Different stages are vulnerable at different times.
Spray during the nymph stage when the insects are soft-bodied? Very effective. Spray during the adult stage when they’ve developed hard shells? Much less effective.
We know these windows, and we know exactly when to apply treatment for it to actually work.
Spray vs. Injection vs. Pruning
Spraying
- Works great on smaller trees and for insects on the outside of the plant. Good for aphids, spider mites, Japanese beetles. Not effective for insects that burrow into bark or live deep in the wood.
Systemic injection
- Delivers treatment throughout the tree's vascular system. Better for large mature trees and for pests that hide in protected areas. Also better for some diseases.
Pruning
- If an infestation is localized to specific branches, removing those branches is the quickest solution. Dead wood doesn't harbor pests.
We’ll recommend treatment based on your specific tree and pest problem that we identify during our assessment.
