How Systemic Injections Work
Think of your tree like a circulatory system. The xylem carries water and nutrients up from the roots. The phloem distributes sugars and other compounds throughout the tree.
When we inject a treatment, the tree’s vascular system distributes it. An insecticide reaches every branch. A fungicide reaches infected wood. The treatment goes where the problem is, not just where we spray.
For mature trees dealing with serious pest or disease pressure, this is more effective than spraying.
When Injections Make Sense
- Large, mature trees They're too big to spray effectively. Injections deliver treatment throughout the entire canopy.
- Emerald ash borers, hemlock woolly adelgids, and similar deep-feeding pests These pests burrow into the wood or live in protected areas where spray won't reach them. Systemic treatment circulates through the tree and kills them.
- Fungal diseases in the vascular system Dutch elm disease, verticillium wilt—these are vascular diseases. Spray doesn't reach them. Injection does.
- Trees under extreme stress If a tree is barely hanging on, avoiding the physical stress of heavy spraying equipment and multiple applications can matter.
- When spray has failed Sometimes you've tried spray and it didn't work. Injection is the next step.
How We Do It
Assessment
We identify the problem and determine if injection is the right approach. Some issues respond better to other treatments. We tell you upfront.
Timing
We inject at the right time for the specific pest or disease. Early spring works for some things. Mid-season for others. We get the timing right.
Application
We drill small holes into the base of the tree and inject treatment into the sapwood. The tree absorbs it and distributes it through its vascular system. The holes are small and the tree compartmentalizes them quickly.
Monitoring
We follow up to see how your tree is responding. Some treatments show results within weeks. Others take longer. We check in and confirm results.
Why This Works Better Than Spray (In Certain Situations)
Spray covers the outside of leaves and branches. A lot of it runs off or evaporates. Insects on the underside of leaves or inside cracks avoid it.
Injection delivers treatment to every cell of the tree. There’s nowhere for the pest to hide. The concentration is higher and more reliable.
Is it overkill for mild problems? Probably. But for serious infestations in mature trees, it’s the most effective tool available.
